Art is good. You don’t have to consider underlying meanings or connotations.

In Brief: Passing Boulder Ballot Measure 2F would basically increase the size of the (City of) Boulder Arts Commission to seven members, while the Commission is currently at five members. Terms for the two new members would be three years for one and five years for the other. The current Commissioners were appointed for five-year terms, and Commissioners are unpaid. Measure 2F would amend the City Charter, which is like the City’s constitution, and if it passes it would take another vote of the people to amend or repeal anything in 2F.

In brief, the Commission promotes and encourages arts in the city; advises City Council and makes budget recommendations to Council on arts-related issues; administers the City’s arts grant program and assists in preparation of grant applications for the City; and consults with local arts groups.

Richard’s Take: Vote YES. This is probably the least controversial City measure this year. Since Commission members are unpaid, fiscal impact is not a problem. More members would allow for more voices, add collective arts experience to the Commission, potentially increase diversity, potentially enable more work to be accomplished, and give more city residents an opportunity to serve the public. Larger groups may mean longer meetings or more divergent opinions, but a seven-member Commission is hardly so big as to be unmanageable.
